Books and Reading

Did you know that people that read books on a regular basis are more likely have a fulfilling life? This sounds like a big statement to make but it is true. However, it doesn’t have to be just books – reading current events, short stories, and essays can help expand your world and make you a better person.

How does this happen? Well, there are several things that reading does to a person. Reading often helps to increase your vocabulary. This makes it easier to interact and communicate – you are better ablelots of books in a pile to let people understand yourself as well as knowing what people are trying to communicate to you. Additionally, reading across a wide variety of topics expands your horizons and opens up the world to you.

Opening up the world may not sound like much, but you truly do not know what all is out there until you find out about it. It’s like the statement, “I don’t know what I don’t know”. By reading books and other literature, you are showing yourself more of the world and different ways of thinking, understanding, and more.

One great way that reading can impact people is by showing them cultural differences and similarities. Many of us will never have the chance to travel to far off continents and countries. However, you can open a book, magazine, or newspaper, and find out all about these far off and wonderful places. While it is certainly not the same as travelling there yourself, you can learn about what it is like, how the people there are different or the same, and what is interesting about this new place.

Can you imagine a world without books? How boring life would be. There would be no great novels. No escaping into a new world just by picking up pieces of paper with writing on them…

How can you start reading more or help other to read more? Talk about what you have read. Talk about what you like to read or find interesting. You don’t have to prove that you’re “smart” or “know more”, but by showing others that reading can improve your life you are well on the way to helping them pick up a book again. This can be difficult with adults who haven’t read in a long time, but with children it is very easy.

Remember – reading is important! Books and other sources of written information are part of the past time of modern human beings – don’t miss out on this great source of information, fun, learning, and adventure!
